I am working on a print version of the Rogues of Clwyd-Rhan story Headsmen as promised to my sponsors. It looks like I should be able to do it in colour. Because Headsmen is only 11 full pages, I've been looking for a bonus feature, and it looks like the older story Alchemists fits the bill. Because those pages, originally published in Black and White, would end up becoming part of colour-printed sheets, I've decided to test if I could colour them in a style similar to that of Headsmen.

As it turns out, colouring my old, sloppy, crowded linework is a lot harder than colouring the clean originals of Headsmen, but not in fact un-doable. Took just under 2 hours to do, including fixing many broken lines. At various points, such as Atra's hair, I gave up using the flood fill and coloured the area with the photoshop brush, and I think the colouring has turned out the better for it.

Line art drawn in 1992! Colour done in PS 7 in March, 2006. Included in Digital Art because the digital aspect of the work is the reason you're looking at this now.

I do like the colours (except for the cheese, it's too damn yellow). But there seems to be less contrast then in the original b/w drawings. I kinda miss that. But that could also because I've known the original for a long time, and it takes time getting used to. Sort of like a colour version of Laurel & Hardy. Or not :P

You always get that trade-off if you colour something. I may make a few elements lighter/less saturated to restore contrast. But judging from the test prints I made of that Headsmen first page, it won't be as much of a problem in print.

Thanks! So unlike ~kittypuss you're voting in favour of the cheese?
